Lasers for Skin Treatment and Hair Removal

By Morgana Reichel

Hair removal and skin treatment are the two primary uses for lasers in cosmetic procedures.

Laser Hair Removal

Having hair in unwanted places is not only a hassle, but it can make you self-conscious about the way you look. Laser hair removal offers an easy, long-lasting, and virtually painless way to remove unwanted hair, and keep it off.

It is a fairly straightforward process. A high energy beam of light emitted by a laser is absorbed by the hair follicle. The hair follicle is treated just long enough, so as to not damage the surrounding skin, with laser pulses that last only a fraction of a second. The hair bulb at the base of the hair follicle is destroyed when the the laser light energy is transformed into heat and absorbed.

Your hair colour depends on a pigment called melanin, which is produced by melanocytes, and is found in the hair bulb. In laser hair removal, the target for the laser energy is this melanin pigment. A laser's energy will be absorbed into the follicle more effectively, producing better results, if an individual has more melanin in his/her hair.

It doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal, but the treatment effectively slows hair growth. To provide relief from unwanted hair, it typically takes several treatments. As well, periodic maintenance treatments might be needed as well.

Hair removal treatments safely remove body hair without damaging the surrounding lighter skin with the laser.

In general, the procedure is painless. Possible symptoms, which are minor and curable, include: slight discomfort that feels like a rubber band against the skin may occur, and soreness or tenderness may accompany the healing process.

Laser hair removal is great because it offers long-term results. It may take repeated treatments to be completely rid of unwanted hairs, but once they're gone, this effect usually lasts. And any new hair growth is easily treatable.

Laser Skin Treatments

Skin treatments involving lasers differ from hair removal, because they go beyond the upper layer of skin (epidermis) and target below the second layer (dermis). There are various types of laser skin treatments and one very popular type is laser skin resurfacing. With a laser, layers of damaged skin are gently removed so healthy skin can form in its place.

Skin treatments with a laser can even the skin tone and diminish the signs of aging, including highly-visible veins, blotchiness and wrinkles.

Another type of laser skin treatment works by penetrating the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin to build healthy new tissue underneath. The tightness and elasticity that your skin once had will be repaired, in no time at all, because this healthy tissue will reduce sagging skin and wrinkles.

The actual laser skin treatment is rarely painful. And, the pain during healing is minimal in the majority of cases. Following the resurfacing session, your face will likely be red and a little swollen. This should go away in less than a week. You can go back to your regular life right after you leave the clinic. To achieve the desired results with laser skin treatment, it may take several procedures; the results can often be subtle, yet by the end of your sessions, you should see noticeable changes in your skin.
