Interesting Facts From The History Of Professional Wrestling

By Janelle Burnett

Millions of fans simply cannot get enough of the spectacle of two or more men grappling with each other in a testosterone saturated match in an arena designed to heighten the tension. There are television shows dedicated to this sport, although, strictly speaking, it is not a sport any more. However, the history of professional wrestling goes back many years and has a noble origin.

In time, this so called sport has mutated in a form of amusement. Matches are carefully scripted and the outcomes are known to the organizers and the contestants alike. Every move, every attack and every action is carefully planned and rehearsed. Strangely, many fans refuse to acknowledge this fact, preferring to believe that the match is real and that the eventual winner achieved victory through his own efforts.

Modern matched are typically pitched battles between at least one hero and one villain. Most successful participants have stage names, masks and recognizable costumes. The public is encouraged to take sides and to become involved in matches. The uninitiated may be aghast at the amount of abuse hurled at the participants by the crowd, but this is par for the course and part of the entire show.

The fact that these matches are mainly staged as carefully planned extravaganzas does not mean that it is without risk. Many scenarios can be extremely risky and serious injuries are always a very real possibility. Participants are almost always muscular and physically strong, but they also need to be agile and quick. Most successful contestants are extremely fit and they watch their diets carefully.

Critics lambast the organizers of these events for promoting them as sporting occasions and for misleading the public. Organizing bodies are of the opinion that they simply provide entertainment and that the fans are fully aware of exactly how matches are planned and executed. Amateur wrestle organizations also criticize pro events, saying that the reputation of their sport is brought into disrepute.

Pro events as they are known today originated with the carnivals that used to travel from town to town in the eighteen hundreds. One of the big attractions used to be the wrestler that dared anybody in the audience to enter the ring with him. Cash prizes were offered for takers that could last a certain amount of time or even subdue the professional.

The shows that are so much enjoyed by millions of people go back centuries. In the ancient Babylon and Egypt the sport was prestigious and it is depicted in many drawings from those times. However, it was the Greeks that refined the sport and its popularity continued in the Roman period. It is from this period that the modern version originates and is differentiated from the amateur version in that grappling below the waist is allowed.

The history of professional wrestling is certainly colorful. Many extravagant and famous heroes have been created in modern times and the extravaganza of a brutal physical battle between the giants continues to draw the crowds. As a form of entertainment it is certain to last for many years to come.
