Now the Norm: Cosmetic Procedures

By Melinda Croning

Everyone wants to look well rested and more youthful. Plastic surgeons help patients regain their youthful appearance - without having to undergo surgery - by using injectables and skin treatments. Patients who want to improve their appearance without the risk of complications or recovery time needed with more invasive plastic surgery treatments find non-invasive cosmetic procedures appealing.

These days, everyone freely admits if they have had cosmetic surgery, but not long ago it was seen to be embarrassing to admit to having cosmetic surgery of any kind - the world has changed dramatically. One of the fastest growing areas of plastic surgery is non-surgical procedures. Non-surgical procedures focus on the troublesome areas of the face and body that might make you look old and tired. While the results are often temporary, these procedures are very effective in the short term.

Patients may opt for non-invasive alternatives rather than surgery for a variety of reasons. The affordability of these treatments is a prime concern. Injectables or surface treatments are relatively inexpensive, while surgery may be out of your budget. Second, recovery requires little to no downtime. It can be difficult to get time off of work, as those of us with jobs know all too well. Most of these procedures are done in very little time at the office and patients are able to immediately return to their normal routine. The safety factor and the reduced risk are also factors. This type of cosmetic procedure presents very few complications as compared to surgery. And if you are not happy with the results, they will eventually wear off.

Injectables and surface treatments are the two main types of non-invasive procedures. In an effort to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, injectables are typically used to plump up the face. Surface treatments, like laser treatment and chemical peels, reduce wrinkles. The most popular non-invasive treatment choice for patients is Botox. Injected into the brow area where facial lines and wrinkles exist, it is simply a natural, purified protein.

The deep, persistent lines between your brows that develop over time are smoothed by physicians when they use it. The facial muscles that cause those lines to form will relax for up to four months with only a few tiny injections. Dramatic and apparent results appear within days. The best part is, patients are able to return to normal activity almost immediately after receiving the injections.

The natural process of aging causes skin to lose volume; facial fillers are used to replace it by plumping the skin. These injectables smooth wrinkles and restore the youthful contour of your face.

Laser treatments help reduce the signs of aging, and are another popular non-invasive cosmetic procedure. One procedure that smooths the facial skin and in some cases, can improve the firmness of skin, is called laser skin resurfacing.

To even out skin tone affected by age, sun damage, or acne, a chemical peel is used. Younger, smoother skin is created by this procedure which uses a chemical solution to remove the damaged outer layers of your skin. The look of wrinkles, freckles, scars, fine lines and sun-damage can all be improved by this procedure.

Cosmetic procedures vary. Evidently, there are many ways to make you feel more beautiful and look younger. It's great news that you don't have to break the bank to have a treatment.
